In an astounding surge, the Ercan (Tymbou) airport in Northern Cyprus experienced a remarkable rise in passenger numbers, marking a nearly one-third increase in the first nine months of 2023 compared to the previous year.
Between January and September, the airport welcomed just under 2.9 million passengers, marking an incredible upsurge of 700,000 compared to the same period in the previous year.
Simultaneously, the airport observed a substantial rise in aircraft traffic, with a total of 19,375 landings recorded in the first nine months of the year, up from 16,584 in 2022.
Serhat Ozcelik, the general manager of the airport's holding company T&T, expressed ambitious goals, aiming to achieve a milestone of four million passengers by the end of the current year.
“Hopefully, once we are liberated from embargoes, our airport will open its gates to international flights, allowing our citizens to access direct flights abroad,” Ozcelik stated.
Comparatively, just over six million passengers passed through Larnaca airport in 2022, while nearly 3.2 million passengers traversed through Paphos airport in the same year, setting an all-time high record for the west coast’s airport.
