Advantages of the Sultan Selim Bridge Project - Istanbul
The bridge which was built by the private sector offers access to 135,000 cars on daily basis. Considered as the widest suspended bridge in the world at 59 m, the bridge has 10 lanes out of which 8 are designated for cars (4 lanes on each side) and 2 lanes designated for railways.
The Sultan Selim Bridge is characterized as the longest suspended bridge in the world with railway tracks measuring 2,164 m long and towers measuring a whopping 322 m high. The bridge is the 3rd linking the European and Asian sides of Istanbul. Many Turks and Istanbul residents, in particular, have high hopes that the new bridge will contribute to the easing of massive traffic congestion in the city and reduce pressure on the other 2 bridges.
Car commuters using the bridge to cross from the Asian side to the European side will be able to do so free of charge but will pay approximately 3.3 US Dollars to cross from the European side to the Asian side until 2 January 2017.
The bridge which comes at a cost of 3 Million US Dollars is expected to reduce air pollution and other environmental issues in areas surrounding the two other bridges caused by the massive traffic jams.
