Bringing Your Car into Turkey:

A Guide for Foreigners

Bringing your car into Turkey can be complex due to the high costs and strict regulations. Cars in Turkey are still considered a luxury, with vehicle prices, taxes, and fuel costs being significantly higher than in the UK or Europe. Despite these challenges, it is possible for foreigners to bring their cars into Turkey for up to two years. However, there are specific rules and requirements to be aware of.

Import Regulations for Foreign Vehicles

As of October 2015, visitors can bring a vehicle with a foreign number plate into Turkey for 730 days (two years). This applies to anyone, whether a foreigner or Turk, who resides abroad for more than 185 days in a year. If you have a residence permit in Turkey, this rule does not apply to you. However, if residents have spent the required number of days abroad, they will not be denied entry with their foreign-plate vehicle.

Documents Required:

  • The car's papers.
  • Proof of insurance.
  • A valid warrant of fitness.
  • Power of attorney if the driver is not the vehicle owner.

Initially, you will be issued a six-month permit, which can be extended to 730 days.

Who Can Use the Vehicle? Immediate family members are allowed to use the vehicle, provided they also live abroad.

Consequences of Overstaying: Vehicle owners face hefty fines if their cars overstay, especially after three months.

Blue-Plate and Tax-Free Cars

Certain individuals, such as those with a Turkish work permit, NATO staff, retired foreigners, diplomats, and foreign press, may be eligible to bring their cars tax-free. These vehicles are often referred to as ‘blue-plate cars’. These drivers can register their foreign cars against their passports and permit, provided they pay a touring tax. However, selling a blue-plate car in Turkey can be challenging, as they can only be sold to others meeting the strict criteria.

Buying a Turkish Car

For many expats, purchasing a Turkish car is the most viable option. Foreigners with a valid license and residency can buy a new or second-hand car from dealerships or privately. The process involves legalities and paperwork, so having a trusted Turkish speaker to assist can be beneficial. Popular car brands among expats include Fiats, Fords, Dacias, and Renaults due to lower running costs and better availability of parts.

Steps to Buying a Turkish Car:

  1. Choose your car from a dealership or private seller.
  2. Register the car in your name.
  3. Ensure there are no outstanding debts on the vehicle.
  4. Verify that all compulsory government taxes and insurance are up to date.

Navigating the process of bringing your car into Turkey requires careful attention to regulations and documentation. Whether you choose to bring your vehicle or buy one locally, understanding the legal requirements and associated costs is crucial. Always check the latest laws and regulations, as they can change frequently.
